Priorities to put in your brief

Map office and production boundaries

Document where communications support sales, purchasing, service and plant coordination. Shared phones, paging and physical working conditions can matter as much as desktop applications. Involve the people who own the operational environment before proposing changes.

Prove the required interfaces

Ask for a demonstration of the actual ERP, CRM or service workflow. A manufacturing solution page is not proof of a connector to a particular application. Identify where a standard product ends and a custom integration or specialist device deployment begins.

Plan change around operations

Choose a pilot and cutover window with the operations team. Test voice quality, transfers, escalation and recovery without disrupting production. Keep business IT changes separate from safety or control-system changes unless the appropriate specialists have explicitly scoped the work.
