Backup and disaster recovery serve different needs
Backup creates recoverable copies of data. Disaster recovery adds the infrastructure, dependencies, procedures and testing needed to restore a working business service after a disruption. Recovery objectives and protection scope
Recovery point objective, or RPO, describes the amount of data loss the business can tolerate, expressed as time. Recovery time objective, or RTO, describes the target time to restore service. These are planning objectives, not automatic guarantees. Inventory servers, databases, endpoints and software-as-a-service data, then confirm what each proposed product actually protects. Retention, encryption, administrator access and isolation of recovery copies belong in the same discussion.
Replication, failover and recovery testing
A recovery design may use replication to another location, orchestration to restart systems in order, and network changes to reconnect users. Azure Site Recovery is one option for supported virtual-machine recovery scenarios. Backup services and replication solve different problems, so a replicated environment may still need independent backups. Test whether applications work after restoration, not just whether a virtual machine starts. Document credentials, dependencies, communications and the decision authority for invoking recovery.
Planning a service you can operate
Consider recovery planning during a server refresh, cloud migration, insurance review or after a failed restore test. Ask who monitors protection jobs, investigates failures, performs tests and manages return to the primary environment. Include storage growth, retained copies, replication traffic and recovery-time compute in cost estimates. Agree on a test schedule and record the observed results.
