Choosing backup and disaster recovery
A recoverable business needs more than a successful backup job.
Define the requirement
Name the applications and records the business cannot operate without. For each, define acceptable data loss and recovery time. Those targets should reflect real work: restoring a server is not enough if identity, networking or a dependent database is still unavailable.
Compare the operating models
Backup protects recoverable copies of data. Disaster recovery includes the environment and process for resuming operations. Compare file recovery, full application recovery and an alternate operating location as separate scenarios rather than assuming one product solves all three.
Make the demonstration prove the fit
Ask for a recovery demonstration using representative data. Review isolation of backups, administrator access, retention and the ability to recover after an account compromise. Product labels should be supported by a description of how the controls are configured and tested.
Compare the complete cost
Include storage growth, retention, recovery compute, data transfer and testing in the price. Confirm who declares a recovery event, who performs the work and whether hands-on assistance is included. Record any limits on recovery tests or restored environments.
Plan deployment and ownership
Schedule a test with the application owners and measure time until users can complete a real task. Document gaps, update the runbook and repeat after material changes. Keep recovery credentials and escalation arrangements available when the primary environment is down.
