Define the requirement
Identify the application, its dependencies and the business owner. Document identity, networking, data location and recovery needs. Decide which responsibilities your team will keep and which need an implementation or managed-service partner.
Compare the operating models
Compare virtual machines with appropriate managed services using application compatibility and operational needs. An Azure deployment may also involve desktops, backup or recovery, but each requires its own design and licensing review.
Make the demonstration prove the fit
Request a target architecture and a representative pilot. Test access from actual user locations and validate how the application depends on identity and other systems. Confirm monitoring and recovery behavior before production use.
Compare the complete cost
Estimate compute, storage, networking, backup and support for normal and peak usage. Establish tagging, budget alerts and a regular cost review. Alerts provide visibility; they should not be treated as an automatic spending cap.
Plan deployment and ownership
Agree on the migration sequence, acceptance criteria and rollback plan. Assign ongoing patching, access management, incident response and cost ownership. Reassess longer-term purchasing commitments only after usage and requirements are understood.
Questions to take to your shortlist
- Who owns operations and cost reviews?
- Which dependencies are included in the pilot?
- How will the workload recover or exit?
